  2020 has been a year full of many new adversities and challenges, which forced us to constantly adapt and readjust our lives.  These adversities and challenges were piled on top of the ones we already faced during regular ‘non-pandemic’ life. For some, these every day challenges include meeting basic needs such as food on the table, especially during the holiday season. In hopes of lessening the heavy load of 2020 on top of the already existing challenges the holiday season brings for many, we introduced our Holiday Food Drive Contest. This competition allowed us to help those within our community to get food on the table, while boosting the holiday spirit around the Vanden Bussche office and warehouse. A win-win for sure! Designing and supplying irrigation for over 350,000 apple trees definitely poses its challenges- challenges we’ve been overcoming since 1954.   The Simcoe Seals, the Special Olympics Swim Team in Simcoe, are a group consisting of 40 swimmers and 10 coaches. They’ve had swimmers go to Provincial, National and World games, training four times a week at the local facility. Heading into 2021, the swim fees at this rec centre were increased, posing a financial obstacle for the organization. In 2020, they had 12 swimmers qualified and ready for Provincials, which was cancelled due to Covid-19. On top of this, now there was a high chance that the 2021 season wouldn’t happen because of the increased fees. Vanden Bussche Irrigation President, Marc Vanden Bussche, saw this as an opportunity to give back to the local community, and wanted to make sure the team was able to pay the swim fees at the rec centre and participate in the 2021 season (once Covid safe). Vanden Bussche’s very own Yuriy Gudz is working with Osgoode Farms to install a sub-surface drip irrigation system, a system that can reap many benefits.  Based on Osgoode Farms soil type, sub-surface drip irrigation is a great solution that will preserve moisture, reduce energy, and improve plant growth. The farm has a goal to increase corn yields by 75 bu an acre, and installing this system makes that goal much more attainable. So far, they have installed the first 53 acres of sub-surface drip irrigation, and are planning to irrigate the full 350 acres. This story is featured in the Ontario Farmer.
