How Much Water Do I Need to Irrigate?

Image
Calculating 1" of Water Deciding how much water any plant needs can be difficult.  There are so many factors to consider.  The first seems obvious, what type of plant? Grass, a tomato plant, an apple tree?  Within each plant may be several varieties that may need more water than others. You also need to consider factors such as soil type and evaporation due to wind or sun.  Don’t forget about your limitations on how much water you can access and the irrigation infrastructure (pumps, pipe, filters etc.) in place to capitalize on this opportunity of water. In today’s age there are all kinds of “smart tools” that can help like soil moisture sensors, weather stations, and remote irrigation controls.  These types of tools come with a price tag… as you could expect for such powerful tools.  Some of these can also seem daunting in order to use the tools to its full capacity. At the end of the day, the key to designing an irrigation system is ensuring that it will apply the correct amou

Calculating Water Amount In a Pond for Irrigation Use

Image
If you read our previous article titled ‘Calculating 1” of water’, you’ll know that it can difficult to calculate how much water you need to deliver in order to effectively irrigate. But the general rule of thumb is 1”, and there are constant values that you can use as a benchmark figure out how much water you need to apply per week. If you are irrigating 1,000ft² of turf, you need 620 gallons/week. If you are irrigating 1 acre of vegetables, you need 27,200 gallons/week. Now the conversation becomes, where are we going to get this water? Typical water sources include a municipally supplied source, a well, lake, river or a pond. Municipally Supplied Source, you can use the chart below to get a good idea of the rate of water you have access to from that service line: If you are using water out of a well, your local well digger will be able to tell you how much water is available. Our staff, or that same well digger, would be able to tell you the rate of water you could pull from that

In hopes of lessening the heavy load of 2020 on top of the already existing challenges the holiday season brings for many, we introduced our Holiday Food Drive Contest. This competition allowed us to help those within our community to get food on the table, while boosting the holiday spirit around the Vanden Bussche office and warehouse. A win-win for sure! Here’s how it worked. All employees at our Delhi location were split into four teams: Team Snow Man, Snow Flake, Candy Cane and Mistle Toe. Beginning on Dec. 1st, teams began collecting and bringing in non-perishable food items, placing them in their corresponding
