  • A pumping unit draws water from the source and delivers it to the pipe system.
  • Pipes that provide water to the sprinkler heads.
  • Sprinkler  provides uniform, controllable distribution of water through the soil or air.
  • Other accessories, such as valves, couplers, risers, pressure regulators, timers, etc. 

 

Here are some of the key considerations in planning and designing a sprinkler irrigation system:

Wetting Pattern: Achieving uniform wetting for each crop zone requires placing several sprinklers in an overlapping pattern. However, other factors that impact sprinkler placement and wetting patterns are the type and spacing of crop, water quality and flow rate, wind conditions, and soil intake rates. 

Application Rate: The distance between the sprinklers, the size of their nozzles, and the operating pressure together define the rate of water application to the crops. The application rate should be less than the soil infiltration rate to let the soil absorb and retain water and prevent runoff.

Drop Size: Controlled by the nozzle type and operating pressure, drop size is a critical element based on soil and crop type. 

System Types: From hand-move, side-roll (power roll) system, and linear move systems, to center pivot, travelling gun, and stationary sprinkler systems, there are diverse options within sprinkler irrigation systems. System configurations typically depend on the crop type, crop zones, and landmass you need to cover. 

 

In addition to the traditional spray systems, sprinkler irrigation also includes low-volume sprinkler systems with misters and foggers and the rotor systems installed underground with pop-up sprinklers.
